Government sets K12 million price cap for low-cost housing project

Myanmar real estate news More than 2000 homes are to go on sale next month in three low-cost housing projects built by the Ministry of Construction in Dagon Seikkan and Hlaing Tharyar townships. The most expensive apartments, on the ground floor, will sell for K12 million, said U Min Aung Aye, deputy director of the ministry’s Rural and Housing Development Department on June 20.

This will be the first of a series of sales planned under the current administration within Yangon Region that will sell for even lower prices.

“In July, we will sell apartments at Kanaung housing project in Dagon Seikkan and Yuzana and Shwe Lin Pan projects in Hlaing Tharyar. The price of a ground-floor apartment will be K12 million, and less for the upper floors,” he said.

There will be 2208 apartments available in all in the current round of sales, including 864 apartments in the Yuzana low-cost housing project 1 near Yuzana Garden Housing, Dagon Seikkan township, 840 in the Kanaung project and 504 in Shwe Lin Pan project 3, Hlaing Tharyar township.

Of these, 70 percent will be transferred to Yangon Region government for sale to the public, and the remaining 30pc will be sold to civil servants by the Union government directly, said U Yu Khine, director of the Rural and Housing Development Department on June 21.

“The apartments designated for Yangon Region are not yet complete, but we will soon announce details of sales to the public,” he said, adding that about 20pc of the work remained to be completed in the four-storey building.

Would-be applicants will be able to find sales details in the state-owned media.

Senior assistant teacher Daw March Lar Tin said she was looking forward to the chance to buy. “Under the previous government, we applied to buy at Shwe Lin Pan as we had nowhere to live. They drew lots, but we weren’t chosen. We also applied to the Bandoola housing, but without success. The rent is going up all the time.”

The government term also plans to build eight five-storey and six four-storey low-cost housing blocks with more than 8000 apartments of 400 square feet in Mingaladon and Dagon Seikkan townships, Yangon Region, for sale at K7 million. They say construction will soon begin.
